Back in the day, in Scotland, (home for me) the legal age for marriage was 16 and over the border in England you had to be a solid 21 years of age. This meant that two young, determined lovers could escape their parents and run away to say their vows in Scotland. The most popular spot for doing so was and still is Gretna Green. The practice became so popular that the village blacksmith even doubled as a Priest! This was my interpretation of elopement. Recent years have made them so much more popular!
